~USA’s vetoes anti-Israel resolution~

21 Feb

In the midst of political unrest in several nations, there was hope for a step in the right direction. 130 nations had sponsored a UN Security Council resolution, calling on Israel to cease settlement activity in Palestinian Territory.

Amnesty International, an active human rights group, has condemned Israel’s policy of settling civilians in occupied land as it violates the Fourth Geneva Convention. And the resolution was considered to be a step towards preserving the human rights of those in the region.

All other 14 members of the Security Council voted for this resolution and the USA stood alone, stating the reason being that they wanted the both sides to negotiate and not have hardened views against each other, which this resolution would encourage.

I just wonder why the USA never thought of negotiating when the Afghanistan issue was at the forefront, we should have reasoned with the Taliban as opposed to warring with a country and leaving it shell shocked an unable to rebuild itself?

Why did we not negotiate before invading Iraq in the search for weapons of mass destruction, which did not exist!

I’m just a bit outraged that the UN still exists in the state where it has no power! What is the point of the UN anymore? To allow countries like the USA to legitimately carry out its conquests, while condemning those not in its interest?

This is a little off the subject but…

Sometimes when I travel complete strangers hear that I am American and think they can just walk up to me and tell me what they hate about my country. Usually they tell me America should quit sticking their nose where it doesn’t belong. I tell them I agree 100%! The US should mind it’s own business and worry about our own problems. We should focus on the economy and ourselves. We need a vacation on isolation island. ;)

Then I tell them I know a few countries that would love for us to take a year off. Like Iran or North Korea who would probably step up quickly to take over and do a much better job. :D

u cannot blame the UN when u have permanent members with more rights than the rest.

i find the message at the end of Lord of War strangely befitting this situation.

the world would fare much better if the US would stop intervening everywhere.

i have yet to see a single WMD come out of Iraq, as opposed to the “undisclosed” nuclear stockpile in Israel, whereas the rest of the middle east is dog-leashed and forbidden to engage in any nuclear activity without the UNs (i.e. USA) approval.

    like i said, hidden agendas.

      that’s all true
but what is the point of having the UN when it is in effect unable to enforce anything?
why should the security council have some permanent members and not others?
so that interests can be maintained of those countries that are wealthiest and most developed?
UN’s great at maintaining bodies to encourage education…
and give aid etc (mainly their human rights work)
      beyond, i’m not sure

why does everybody do what the USA allegedly dictates? i’m an American and I will admit the USA is not perfect but the “followers” are to blame as well. we need to cast blame where blame is due and that is inclusive of more than one country.

      i completely agree!
that’s why i was upset that the UN was a bit of a joke!
from League of Nations to the United Nations.
      what’s changed?
      not much

one would think that common sense should triumph in such cases; but unfortunately there are hidden agendas at play that the average joe & jane just remain oblivious to.

the world shall never no peace until this blind backing of tyranny ends.

i don’t think common sense exists in cases such as this!
common sense ceases to exist when different interests are at play!
it is purely a case of understanding that we, as humans, get so caught up in the fight for “right”
      we forget all other consequences!
therefore, we have allowed USA to dictate which countries shall negotiate, and which shall be attacked, for might is right.
